Madcap Coffee
Fulton Cafe
Creative Direction & Design
Project
Originally a garage, later turned into office space with an covered facade, this unremarkable building on Fulton Street was easy to ignore. When Madcap decided to make this the location of its newest cafe, the starting point was finding inspiration in the history of the area and the building’s original use as an auto garage. The goal was to create a neighborhood cafe where people would want to spend time, making the routine special. This location required significant construction - the exterior facade was removed, interior walls were torn down and a load bearing beam was installed so the space could be open. A garage door was returned to its original spot so the cafe could be opened to the patio in warmer months, integrating inside with outdoor patio. Inside the cafe, bar seating allows customers and baristas to interact, or customers can opt to gather at the standing bar or sit at the banquette. Iconic wire Eames chairs from Herman Miller pay tribute to the long history of furniture in West Michigan. The custom neon raceway sign on the new awning was designed as a reminder to the building’s original use.
The Fulton Street cafe is connected to the Madcap Roastery where the coffee is stored, roasted and packaged. A breathtaking mural painted by Pat Perry was commissioned for the roastery and warehouse, giving the street new life.
